The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Bayelsa State chapter has advocated for commuters patronage of government designated Parks in the state.

Speaking to newsmen in Yenagoa, during the Workers Day celebration, the state association chairman, Chief Dr. Ifie, Oyinkuro Erebo, explained that commuters patronizing fake parks or boarding vehicles along the roadside exposed themselves to criminal elements and also encourages touting.

He opined that in the event of loss of items or any form of harassment, it would be difficult to trace lost items.

He urged commuters to report any form of harassment by his members, because according to him; “They will not be on the road or at the parks without the commuters.”

On the menace of touts, he said; “Our core mandate is to reduce touting, holiganism and other vices on our roads. We have gone far in doing these. We decent people and law abiding.

“We work with the security agencies to achieve our tasks of reducing touting, so that nobody accuses us of taking laws into our hands.”

The RTEAN chairman said the body has tried to intervene on the arbitrary increase in the price of transportation in the state.

His words; “In the wake of fuel pump price increments, we intervened and tried to maintain a balance to the benefits of the drivers and commuters.

“The lack of uniform price of fuel in the state does not help issues. Fuel stations sell at different prices, so to make the drivers conform to an agreed transport rate becomes a challenge.”

On the day’s business, the transport association chairman eulogised the state governor, Sen. Douye Diri, describing him as a listening governor who has the people at heart.
