RSHA CRISIS: High Court Stops Amaewhule, Maol From Parading As Speaker, Deputy

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has granted an interim injunction restraining Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule and Hon. Dumle Maol, from parading themselves as Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively.

The Federal High Court, presided by Justice Phoebe M. Ayua has November 7, stopped the defendants/respondents from disturbing, obstructing or interfering with the legislative proceedings of the Rivers State House Of Assembly and/or the legislative duties and functions of Rt. Hon. Ehie Ogerenye Edison as the Speaker Rivers State House Of Assembly in accordance with Section 90 – 104 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as altered), pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice filed in the suit.

The court is also said to have granted an interlocutory injunction restraining the Inspector General of Police, Director, Department Of State Services and Commisioner Of Police, Rivers State from giving effect to any instruction issued by Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule and Hon. Dume Maol aimed at disturbing, obstructing or interfering with the legislative proceedings of the Rivers State House Of Assembly and/or the legislative duties of the Rt. Hon. Ehie Ogerenye Edison as Speaker of the Rivers State House Of Assembly in accordance with Section 90 – 104 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as altered), pending the hearing and final determination of the Motion on Notice filed in this suit.

The suit, with number FHC/PH/CS/240/2023, was filed by the Rivers State House of Assembly and Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Ehie Ogelenye Edison as plaintiffs/applicants, on Tuesday, November 6th, against Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule and Hon. Dume Maol, former Speaker and deputy speaker Rivers State House of Assembly respectively, the Inspector General of Police, Director, Department of State Security and Rivers State Commissioner of Police as defendants/respondents.
