Killings: Senate Orders Arrest, Prosecution of SARS Officers
1 min readThe Nigerian Senate has given an order that operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad(SARS) who were involved in recent killings of innocent Nigerians should be arrested and prosecution.
President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, gave the order while ruling on a Senate resolution on a motion by Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
In her motion, Senator Tinubu drew the attention of senators to the recent extra-judicial killings and abuse of human rights by SARS officials.
According to Lawan, the dismissal of the operatives was not enough, but that they must be prosecuted.
“Those who are involved in the recent killings of innocent Nigerians should be arrested and prosecuted.
Scrapping the SARS now may not be the best option because the nation may lose the best hands in the agency while trying to do away with the bad eggs among them.
The Senate also directed its committee on Police, Judiciary and Human Rights to probe human rights abuses of Nigerians by SARS officials in recent years.
The lawmakers further mandated the Nigerian Police authorities to use part of its trust fund to train its men.
