FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION: Unuwhe Wheshi Eze Igbu Orlukwor Calls On Gov’t, Stakeholders To Strengthen Laws & Policies

The wife of Orlukwor Kingdom Monarch, Her Royal Highness, Queen Nancy Ike Ehie, Unuwhe Wheshi Eze Igbu Orlukwor has added her voice to the global call on governments at all levels, critical stakeholders and others for stricter measurements on female genitals mutilation practice.
Queen Ehie, who made the call to commemorate the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), which is globally observed on every 6th day of February, added that the practice, outside its dehumanizing and the emotional trauma it places the girl child, it also exposes the girl child to health risks.
She condemns Female Genital Mutilation in all its forms and calls on governments, policymakers and stakeholders to strengthen laws and policies to prevent and respond to FGM.
Unuwhe Wheshi Eze Igbu Orlukwor urges Governments at all levels to Increase funding for initiatives addressing FGM support survivors and provide access to justice and reparations.
She opined that creating awareness against the mundane practice is another area that needs to be improved on, assuring the public that the practice would soon become a history in her kingdom.
The Igbu Orlukwor Monarch’s wife wondered the loud silence emanating from traditional and religious leaders, appealed that they too join in the campaign against FGM and promote alternative rites of passage that respect the rights and dignity of girls and women.
She called for synergy amongst groups championing campaigns to break the silence and continue to challenge the harmful traditions, and demand an end to FGM.
This year’s theme, “Stepping up the pace “, emphasizes the need for collective action to eradicate this harmful practice that affects millions of girls and women worldwide.
