INT’L. GIRL-CHILD DAY: Parents Should Be Positive Role Models – Dr. Bethy Nwoka

Parents have been advised to be positive role models to their children through their practical lifestyles.
Giving the advice in an exclusive chat with Bochnews, an Advocate and Girl Child Counselor, Dr. Bethy Nwoka, explained that parents inculcating the right values and virtues in their children would go a long way to positively build the girl child’s self esteem and self worth.
Dr. Nwoka, who frowned at some parents shying away from their responsibilities of adequately guiding and guarding their girl child, which might work against her discovering her strength and potentials, stressed that parents should above all, all imbibe praying habits on the girl child.
She urged parents to play intentional roles of loving their children, especially the girl child to enable her grow self confidence against life odds.

The girl child Advocate, who described discrimination against the girl child as more biting than abuse, opined that no male will rape, sexually exploit a girl child he truly respects, added that it is when she is being discriminated and seen as worthless or a mere sex tool, that abuse occurs.
On the girl child advantages above her male counterparts, she said: “If the girl child potentials are properly harnessed and she is allowed to explore and exploit opportunities for progress, the girl child can multi task productively.
“Multi tasking produces multiple results within a period. It means she can effectively carry out multiple responsibilities and still keep her stamina intact. This usually yields positive results both in the home front, at school and in her social relationships. This also helps her develop strong leadership skills that will also benefit the society at large.”
She called on the government to be more proactive in formulating and implementing policies that provide good and equitable opportunities, supportive on the girl child educational needs and protective by punishing offenders without any bias.
Buttressing on the ordeal of the girl child, Dr. Nwoka said the International Year of the Girl Child is being marked to nurture the potentials and strength of the girl child, encourage her rights fulfilment and also to create opportunities for growth and help her out of poverty.
