Fmr Pres. Jonathan Makes Case For New Universities

A Former President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, has called on the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) to make a special allocation for new federal universities to enable them have basic infrastructure necessary for a conducive learning environment.
Jonathan made the call when he received a Presidential Visitation Panel to Federal University Otuoke recently.
According to him; “Without intervention from TETFUND, there would be shortage of facilities to cater for the large population of students being admitted into the schools.
“Let me use this opportunity to convey my message to the TETFUND. The new universities set up, TETFUND should have a special allocation for the universities.”
“The idea of setting up the interventionist fund was for government to make a budget and TETFUND concentrate on the basic needs of the institutions to build them to the required standards.”
He expatiated that because the universities are new, such intervention would make it meet its basic needs.
The former president gave reasons for establishment of Almajiri schools in some parts of the country during his administration, he noted that the idea was to incorporate the Islamic education with Western education to enable those who graduated from such schools have opportunities to work in civil service.
He commended the panel members for the visit, adding that such measures are necessary for upholding standards in the education system.
Earlier, chairman of the panel, Professor Immaculate Nwokoro, stated they were visiting FUO to review and assess the performance of the institution based on academic standard, projects, amongst others.
Prof. Nwokoro who commended the giant strides achieved in education during the administration of the former president, appealed that he supports the school in any possible way he can.
The chairman of the panel was accompanied by the Vice Chancellor of FUO, Prof. Teddy Adias and other members of the panel.
