Woman Loses Pregnancy Due to Alleged Police Brutality
2 min readA Rivers State based woman, identified as Mrs Joy Godstime Ihunwo says she has lost her pregnancy due to alleged brutality by men of Anti-Kidnapping unit in the state.
A scan result dated 10th April, 2021, presented by Mrs Ihunwo and sighted by newsmen, showed that she lost the pregnancy.
Mrs Ihunwo called on human rights community and well meaning Nigerians to help her get justice.
Narrating her ordeal, the woman said that she was in her house on Tuesday April 6, 2021, when men of Anti-kidnapping unit came looking for her husband who is the Chief Security Officer of Rumu-Elechi community in Mile 3 Diobu, Port Harcourt.
She stated that despite arresting her husband and some of his vigilante group members,some of the Police officers broke into her room and allegedly beat her up with butt of the gun before whisking her away to their office alongside her husband and his workers.
Mrs Ihunwo disclosed that she was released later in the night that same day and brought back to the house by the men of Anti-kidnapping unit after intervention of a rights group.
She also accused the unit of stealing her money, some other valuables and engaging in wanton destruction of property
Meanwhile, a rights group, Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign has called on the Police Authorities to investigate the circumstance that led to the loss of pregnancy by Mrs Ihunwo after the alleged brutality.
A lawyer with the group Mrs Jane James called on the Police Authorities to ensure the officers found culpable should be brought to book.
She said justice must be done and seen to be done in the circumstance.
It was reported that some of the vigilante members who were arrested have been granted bail by the Anti-kidnapping unit.
